ملخص:This book explores America's many intersections with the world from World War I to the present. It shows how Americans from various walks of life participated in the world community. It examines why and how American leaders devised policies to protect, manage, and extend U.S. interests abroad. The documents and essays in [this book] reveal that searching debate - among Americans and foreign peoples, and among scholars who study the past - has surrounded most issues. Indeed, Americans have spiritedly debated one another about their place in the world, their wars, their territorial expansion, their overseas commitments, their trade policies, and the status of their principles and power; and with comparable vigor, they have debated the people of other nations about the spread of U.S. interests, culture, and ideologies. This book captures the reasoning and the passion that informed these debates by probing the factors that influenced decisionmakers, the processes by which decisions are made, and the impact of those decisions on the United States and other nations.-Pref.
