"In the field of energy and development, the world faces two major challenges: 1. Providing energy access to the 1 billion people world-wide who do not have access to electricity and providing modern energy access to more than 2.5 billion people who rely on traditional biomass for basic needs such as cooking and heating. 2. Achieving socio-economic development while limiting global atmospheric temperature increases to 2 degrees Celsius. International policies and initiatives are aiming to address these challenges, such as through the Sustainable Development Goals SDGs and especially SDG7 on sustainable energy, the United Nation's goal of providing universal energy access by 2030 (SE4All) and the Paris Agreement to mitigate climate change. At the same time, the energy sector and energy-related industries in many countries are undergoing a transition from fossil fuels to low carbon energy. Against this background, the book explores the key issues and concepts in the field of energy and development and addresses policy responses to end energy poverty and to achieve sustainable development. The book outlines various options for delivering energy access, analyses past and prospective energy transitions and examines the social, environmental, economic and technological implications of these options. Taking a holistic and multi-disciplinary approach, and containing useful teaching resources, this book provides a foundation for understanding the complex relationships between energy and development. It is a great resource for postgraduate and undergraduate students, scholars, practitioners and policy-makers in the fields of energy studies, international development, environmental studies, industrial engineering as well as social sciences that relate to energy and development"-- Provided by publisher.
