The Middle East crisis, though its significance is clearly becoming global, has been narrowly viewed by many ob-servers as merely a conflict between Israel and her immediate Arab neighbors, especially Egypt, Syria and Jordan. In reality the issue goes deeper and wider into a region extending from the Atlantic to the Indian oceans and inhabited by more than one hundred million people. It includes the whole of North Africa, the Arab crescent comprising the area between the Mediterranean and the Persian Gulf, and the Arabian Peninsula. These countries, though often differing on certain matters of local interest, are united in their defense of Arab rights against Israel. Because of the religious affinity between Arabs and Muslims in Asia and Africa, the four hundred million Muslims of these continents are now showing increasing concern about Israel's resort to force in imposing her demands on the Arabs without regard to their rights and feelings. No sooner had the crisis arisen in May 1967 than books and periodical material began to make their appearance in an increasing quantity to explain its nature and possible consequences. Unfortunately the bulk of published accounts has either explained or expounded the Israeli view-point on the subject without regard to the rights and grievances of the other party (or parties) concerned. Little has been written with detachment which might throw light on the deeper causes of the conflict and its adverse effects on Western prestige and interests in that part of the world. As a result, an objective discussion of the issue has been palpably lacking and no balanced assessment of the conflict has yet been presented to the public. It is the purpose of this editor to put together in a single volume the views of a few writers well-known for their moderation, long experience and fair-mindedness, which may help the reader to form a more balanced opinion on the nature and ramifications of the conflict. The Editor wishes to acknowledge the kindnesses of all the writers and publishers who have given permission to reproduce their published material in this volume. Need-less to say, she alone is responsible for any error that may have been made in editing these papers.
