"Soldiers of Destruction", by Charles W. Sydnor (jnr.) would have to be put on the top of Waffen SS surveys and books written after the sixties. There are only a few books about World War II which covers one of its most interesting subjects: Hitler's best army troops... the Waffen SS! The author first deals with the question about the different points of views historical studies have approached the "thelos" (id est, the ending) for what and why the SS have been created. He focus his study on the SS Totenkopfverbande, later the SS Panzer-grenadier Totenkopf "Theodore Eicke" and its development through the war. Despite the authour is quite critic of the SS policies in occupied Europe, underlining and far exaggerating most of his atrocities, the book is fully coloured by first hand material from many sources plus lot of quotations the reader would be glad to check... In conclusion, an excellent scholar and fully documented masterpice work on the SS best divison: the Totenkopf "Theodore Eicke". Highly recommended. An inevitable reading.
