Here is the first encyclopedia in ABC-CLIO's Transatlantic Relations series, which aims "to explore the myriad connections and interconnections of the Atlantic world." The encyclopedia's editors (Kaufmann is also the series editor) are well versed in the subject, having both worked on New Perspectives in Transatlantic Studies (University Press of America, 2002). Included in the scope of this interdisciplinary work are historical events (Boston Tea Party, Falklands War, Yalta Conference); places (Brazil, Jamestown, Ontario); and economic, social, political, and cultural forces (Fur trade; Nuclear weapons; Reggae; Slave trade, Atlantic; Treaties, Britain-U.S.). The editors have broadened the focus to encompass regions besides just England and the U.S. The encyclopedia includes a series of introductory essays for the novice researcher covering British relations with the "Atlantic World," Canada, the Caribbean, and Latin America as well the U.S. Additional tools are a "Topic Finder," which is helpful to those in need of research inspiration, and an extensive 46-page chronology that covers 1009 C.E.- 2004 C.E., beginning with the Vinland Sagas and ending with an official report concerning Iraq and WMDs. There are more than 400 signed entries in alphabetical order, and each includes see also's and references. The entries average about two pages, with the longest, Cold War and Explorers, British in the Americas, at seven pages each. There is one combined subject and person index in volume 3. While the references are helpful and well researched, the work could benefit from one comprehensive bibliography. Well written and engaging enough to be used for research or to be read on its own for enjoyment's sake, this inclusive work is recommended for public and undergraduate libraries
