This book is based on the National Deans Survey, conducted across 800 deans at all U.S. 4-year academic institutions. The first part describes the deanship in general, the national survey in particular, and the background of current academic deans. The second part describes how the position of dean is interpreted, what deans believe are their primary roles, and how deans handle such factors as stress, role ambiguity, and conflict.
