This volume opens with a series of articles on the political and cultural components of the terrorist mindset. Tracing the similarities which exist between all terrorist ideologies, regardless of political affiliation. Series 1: "The Culture and Politics of Terrorism," describes the terrorist as a person who believes that his cause and his rights have an absolute value and are under threat from the existing order. In addition, this section correlates the violent cultural climate within our nation with the recent increase in domestic terrorism, suggesting that terrorists are not bizarre anomalies but are to some extent representative of the culture in which they occur. Section II: "The Terrorist and the Terrorist Action," applies Section I's theoretical discussion to a sampling of the actual groups, coalitions, and individuals that have been linked to terrorist violence - a surprising number of people, ranging from self-styled defenders of liberty to Islamist opponents of U.S. foreign policy.
