A critical biography of one of the most respected and beloved labour leaders of late-19th century Britain - Thomas Burt (1837-1922). Based on a conciliatory approach to labour-management relations, burt made the Northumberland Miners' Association one of the most respected labour unions in Great Britain. He commanded national respect as one of the first members of the working class elected to Parliament, representing the borough of Morpeth from 1874 to 1918. "Conciliation" formed the core of his labour and political ideology. He preferred arbitration over confrontation and adamantly opposed the use of strike in labour-management negotiations except as a weapon of last resort.
